Royal Canin Small Starter Mother and Babydog is a dry food formula that covers both the mother and her puppies through the five most demanding stages of early life: gestation, birth, lactation, weaning, and growth up to 2 months. It is made for small-breed dogs and designed so that one formula does the work across the entire early phase, from the final weeks of pregnancy right through to when the puppies are ready to move on to a puppy food.
Key Features :
- One Formula for Five Stages: Covers gestation, birth, lactation, weaning, and growth up to 2 months. You do not need to switch foods during this entire early window.
- Supports the Nursing Mother: The nutritional demands on a lactating female are significant. This formula is built to support her through that period without depleting her body.
- Made for Small Breed Dogs: The formula is calibrated for small breeds specifically, not adapted from a larger breed starter formula.
- Supports Puppy Development from Birth: Newborn puppies have precise nutritional needs from the very start. This formula addresses whether they are nursing or beginning to eat solid food during weaning.
- Bridges the Weaning Gap: As puppies start transitioning from milk to solid food, having a formula designed for that exact window makes the process smoother for the whole litter.
- Practical Trial Size: At 2.5lb, this bag is a good way to introduce the formula into your whelping routine before committing to a larger supply.

Why Choose This Food
- Designed for the Hardest Weeks: The period from late pregnancy through weaning is the most nutritionally demanding stretch in a small dog’s breeding cycle. This formula is built specifically for it.
- Reduces the Need to Switch Foods: Using one formula across all five stages means fewer transitions, less digestive disruption, and one less variable to manage during an already busy whelping period.
- Small Breed Specific Nutrition: Small breed mothers and their puppies have different energy needs and growth rates than large breeds. This formula reflects that rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach.
- Trusted Starter Formula: Royal Canin has a long history of developing life-stage-specific nutrition. The Starter range is one of their most established products in the breeding community.
Feeding Guide
- Feed the mother this formula from the final weeks of gestation through to the end of lactation.
- Puppies can begin eating this food softened with warm water from around three to four weeks, as weaning begins.
- Continue feeding puppies on this formula until around two months of age, before transitioning to a puppy food.
- Always keep fresh water available for both the mother and puppies throughout this period.
When the first two months go smoothly, the rest of the litter’s development has a much stronger foundation to build on.
